Dr. Arno Fried Discusses Pediatric Neurosurgery on WCTC’s “Sound Advice”

wctc fried radio interview

Dr. Arno Fried, a renowned pediatric and adult neurosurgeon, was featured in a compelling hour of information and insights on WCTC 1450 AM’s “Sound Advice.”

Some of the highlights of his appearance included the following commentary:

  • Neurosurgery is among the most complex of surgeries, with 7 years of post-graduate study following by further specialty training, such as Dr. Fried’s own in pediatrics.
  • The first call-in was from Melody, mom of patient Haley. “Dr. Fried saved my daughter’s life,” she said, and to Dr. Fried himself, “I thank you for being who you are.”
  • A breakdown of the main childhood neurosurgery conditions, including hydrocephalus, craniofacial disorders and brain tumors.
  • There have been great advances in childhood cancer, including the fact that 40 years ago, there was only a 10% cure rate for medulloblastoma. Today, that figure is 80%.
  • Concussions – the key is the identification of concussions; rest/recovery of the brain; the best way to avoid them.
  • Epilepsy – Dr. Fried and ANA brought epilepsy surgery to NJ. This surgery can be curative for the right candidate.
  • Dr. Fried believes the major frontiers of neuroscience will be degenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. ANA currently treats a type of degenerative disease in adults, normal pressure hydrocephalus.
  • “Whenever we are dealing with children and families, we have to treat them as our own… We are a family to our patients and among ourselves,” he said.
  • In neurosurgery, “The future is now; and hope is available now.”
