Kevin Kwan, MD

Co-director of the adult and pediatric spine program at Advanced Neurosurgery Associates. He has received specialized fellowship training in the evaluation and treatment of adult and pediatric spinal deformities.

Dr. Kwan believes in maximizing conservative options first before opting for surgery. He believes in conducting the least invasive procedure and tailors his surgical approach to the individual patient’s unique needs. He has specific interest in improving the post-operative rehabilitation of the patient, emphasizing surgical methods to minimize post-operative discomfort, improve mobility and expedite an earlier return to normal life.

Dr. Kwan’s specialized training reflects his belief that a surgeon with the most wide-ranging training is best capable to treat spinal disorders successfully.

After completing his medical training at Stony Brook University and his residency in neurological surgery at Northwell Health, Dr. Kwan completed the prestigious fellowship in spine surgery at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Columbia University in New York emphasizing the operative treatment of complex spinal deformities.

As a result of this background in neurological surgery and orthopedic surgery training background, he brings to each patient the expertise necessary to evaluate and, if required, treat disorders of spinal alignment such as scoliosis or sagittal imbalance.

Dr. Kwan is a leader in and published on the utilization of navigation and minimally invasive techniques for spinal surgery. He incorporates the use of narrow tube retractor techniques for cervical and lumbar microdiscectomy and spinal fusion.

He also has expertise in artificial disc replacement surgery in the cervical spine. He also utilizes the microscope and exoscope to help improve his surgical visualization. Dr. Kwan continues to maintain a close collaboration with spine surgeons of all the major spine centers in the tri-state metropolitan territories.
